Contest for students of grades 9-10 ECOSTEP - FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Latvian Council of sustainable construction, in cooperation with Erglu vocational school and VARAM, organized a contest for students of grades 9-10 "Ecostep - for sustainable construction", popularizing sustainable construction and construction as profession. Ltd. "Šifer" in March 2012 announced an open architectural contest of ideas "The roconstruction/new project building in Nikolaja Reriha street 3, Riga". As the winner, with rights to sigh a contract about the development of the technical project, was determined a contest proposal with a motto "A1R2"(author - Ltd. "Diānas Zalānes projektu birojs"). The 2'nd place got a proposal with a motto "Kulu valley residence 3" (author - Ltd. "Sestais stils"). The 3'rd place got a proposal with a motto "NR1874" (author - Ltd. "TECTUM").
A discussion ARCHITECTURE QUALITIES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SHOW OF THE YEAR

A discussion "Architecture qualities in the context of the Show of the Year"took place on the April 25, 2012, which was the first of the Discussion cycle "Future Riga is already forming", jointly organized by LAA Architecture information center and developers of the dwelling house "Futuris". Aims of discussions are, to encourage conversations about the importance of architecture by offering to the society to get acquainted with the views of professionals in the publications and video materials, dedicated to discussions. The first discussion was led by RTU Architecture and Urban planning faculty pract.doc. Egons Bērziņš. Participating in the discussion: Andris Kronbergs, architect of the office ARHIS, Uldis Lukševics, office NRJA,Andrejs Broks, the chairman of the Latvian Association of Designers, Toms Kokins, architect of the office Arhiidea, Sandra Levāne, assistant professor of the Latvian Academy of Arts,Anita Antenišķe, lector of the RTU Architecture and Urban planning faculty, Artis Zvirgzdiņš, the editor of the Architecture platform A4D and Ake Wiklund - a professor from the Chalmers University of Technology (Goteborg).

The 100-year anniversary of the outstanding Latvian architect Marta Saņa (1923-1972) will be celebrated on the May 4, 2013 and, thinking about the commemoration of the architect, this year in March Latvian Association of Architects announced a sketch contest for the amenity of the architect's resting place in the First Forest cemetery. Architects were invited to submit their applications or sketches, having a free choice of format. Works had to be submitted to the contest until the April 24, but the voting of the architectural community about the best application took place during the 19'th congress of LAA. In total 14 works were submitted, the majority of votes (18) received a work with a motto 00100, author - architect Teodors Nigulis.

In 1888 in Moscow, during the time of construction, collapsed the wall of traders association apartment block - the building, after a project by Aleksandrs Kaminskis, was built on Kuznecka bridge street. People were killed in the accident and in the case the architect was found as the perpetrator, who spent several months in the imprisonment," thus Ilze Martinsone, the manager of the Latvain Architecture museum, begins her story about Aleksandrs Kaminskis in the website "Arterittory". The YEAR 2011 SHOW award in architecture

For the 17'th time the show contest of the best works of Latvian architecture, in which the most urgent and qualitative architecture applications were assessed and the "YEAR 2011 award" was nominated. Receivers of three recognition awards and GRAND YEAR awards were announced by an international jury in a festive ceremony on April 17, 2012 in the Great hall of RTU, Kaļķu street 1. Receiver of the GRAND YEAR 2011 award in the Latvian architecture was received by the Ltd. "Architect Liene Griezīte studio" and Ltd. "Sudraba arhitektūra" for the renovation of the storage house in the Old Riga, in Aldaru street. The team of the project architects - architects Liene Griezīte, Līga Apine, Reinis Liepiņš, Aiga Rozentāle, Kārlis Līcis, Roberts Valdmanis. All of the 25 works, raised on the second round of Year 2011 show, are available in the for of an exhibition in the House of Architects, Riga, Torņa street 11, from the May 2'nd to June 4'th in the working days from 9:00 to 18:00.
The laureates of J.F.Baumanis's prize in 2012

During the LAA 19'th congress, the J.F.Baumanis's prize was presented to two Latvian architects for an excellent contribution to architecture: to Ausma Skujina for the contribution in maintaining the Latvian urban space and cultural landscape and to Gunars Birkerts for the lifelong contribution.

A photo exhibition ARCHITECTS IN THE SWISS ALPS

Until the June 1, 2012 in the House of Architects, in Torņa street 11, a photo exhibition "Architects in the Swiss Alps" by the Skiers' club of the Latvian Association of Architects is opened to visitors. Camera has long ago become one of architects' working tools. Also, entering the mountains, architects continue to take photographs, only this time not with the aim to fix the existing environment to improve or supplement it, but to enjoy the landscape, created by the great architect, in whom skiers themselves or the sparse, seemingly monumental lifting constructions and mountain passes' houses are only a stafage in a bigger, intangible project.

During the architectural "Show of the Year 2011" ceremony on April 27, 2012, for the second year in a row the children award "Zirnis" was also presented. The students' jury of the open-minded education project PUPIL EXPLORER BURGHER [PEB], in cooperation with young architects, chose to present the award "Zirnis" to the architect of the residential building in Jūrmala - Sintija Vaivade.

Is it different?" participants confirmed - after several years of stagnation in the real estate market, private house and construction land segments have activated. However, the demand is changing - residents are looking for smaller houses, think about maintenance costs, consider functionality, thoroughly get involved in the planning. As well, wood is slowly regaining its popularity.
Ausma Skujiņa's exhibition THE RENEWAL OF THE VECPIEBALGA CHURCH in the House of Architects

Starting from the April 26 in the Cafe facilities of the House of Architects Ausma Skujiņa's exhibition "The renewal of the Vecpiebalga church" will be opened to visitors. The story of the project's progressive realizations will be seen in drawing, tracings, photos. If the congregation of the Vecpiebalga church will be open-minded and daring enough, the church in time might get a glass tower, fully opening the church space to sky, as it is conceived by the author of the church renewal project Ausma Skujiņa in cooperation with constructor Ardrejs Barbars. The realization of the glass tower would be a unique project in Latvia, as well as in a larger scope. The church was built in 1845, blown up in 1944, but in 1995 renewal processes were started, which were concluded in 1997, lacking only the volume of the tower. In the regular session of National Council of Architecture, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture (NCA) a discussion, about current architecture politics issues, sector management model and the cooperation mechanisms of the involved institutions, as well as well as significant proposals in the industry legislation, took place. The new initiatives are important not only to the architecture sector, but as well to every individual, using architectural services, because it promotes the understanding of society about their rights for an environment and landscape of high quality.
The 100'th edition of the magazine LATVIAN ARCHITECTURE!

On the April 19'th, 2012 is being released the 100'th edition of the magazine LATVIAN ARCHITECTURE from it's beginning in 1938. The architecture messenger of the Independent Latvia ceased its activity, when the break of the soviet regime began. Its renewal starting from the year 1995 gives an objective view about the ongoing, reserving a proportionate place to reviews of new buildings and their interiors, the analysis of cultural heritage and predictions for the future. In Latvia, urban planners, landscape architects and designers to not have a wide opportunity to reach to the society, and the magazine "Latvian Architecture" gives the floor to all the players in the field of environmental quality.

Latvian Association of Builders has awarded prizes to the best buildings of year 2011

The Latvian association of Builders on the 30'th of March awarded the laureates of the contest "the best building in Latvia of the year 2011". Awards were presented in nominations New building, Reconstruction, Restoration, Renovation and Engineering structure. In total 24 applications were received, the quality of objects was assessed by a jury of 12 people, including three architects - Andris Kronbergs, Juris Dambis, Andis Cinis.

In the Latvian Museum of Architecture on the 4'th of April an exhibition "Architect Aleksandrs Kaminskis" is being opened. The exhibition will be opened to spectators from 5.04.-03.05.12. This exhibition is already the second show, which is prepared especially for the Latvian Museum of Architecture by the Moscow's General Department of Archives.

"Our generation have witnessed the birth and evolution of mobile phones. Solutions, that not a long time ago were almost in the fiction genre, today has become routine. Won't something similar happen to energy efficiency," reasonably questions Juris Grīnvaldis, one of the guest editors of the magazine "Latvian Conctruction" (2012.Nr.2.). There are many answers, everyone has his own point of view. About the energy efficiency, the inclusion of sustainable and environmental availability components in various projects also are telling architects J.Dripe, A.Sīlis, M.Lejnieks. A practice in Denmark, architectural office EFFEKT

During the life-time education program Leonardo Da Vinci, in the October, 2011, we, Andris Rubenis and Agate Kalnpure, will start a practice in the danish architectural office EFFEKT in Copenhagen. The office is small, altogether 15 employees are working here, but it has proven its ambitions and abilities by outperforming better-known danish offices in various contests.
RTU International summer school - 10 year

Riga Technical University International Summer School is an annual two week course for students of architecture, urbanism, landscape design, geography, fine arts and social sciences. It attracts mainly those in the beginning of their studies wanting to improve their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in analysis and design of urban environments. The course is an opportunity to test new research and design approaches in a summery atmosphere, working in an international and multidisciplinary team. More here.
